What is criticism? Many people perceive criticism as negative judgment; to be critical is to find fault. However, while criticism can be negative and judgmental, the true intention of a criticism should be to help improve artworks through an informed discussion or debate about art with the goal to increase the understanding and appreciation of art.

How do you go about criticising someone's work? What's the proper form for criticising, what do you look for, what points do you address in your discussion? What about the other person's feelings? What if I don't know anything about the art I'm criticising? How should I react to criticism of my own work? Are these questions you or your camera club wrestle with?

It's just as important to know what to do with constructive criticism as it is to know how to give constructive criticism. The ideal situation is when the critic receives as much benefit from giving feedback as the artist does from receiving it. Criticism isn't a one-way street. However, many on both sides of the situation are befuddled enough about the process that the end result is usually not very helpful to either party.

These are all questions we'll address in this one-day workshop where you will learn and discuss:

This workshop is for photographers, photography groups/clubs, educators, and anyone engaged in looking at and providing criticism of photography. We will view examples of photographs receiving critical acclaim, practice giving feedback, and discuss the receipt of feedback. Participants will be asked to bring examples of their own work to receive feedback (prints, or digital files for projection).
