books Silver City Siver City

This workshop is a journey back in time. Silver City, nestled in the mountains of southwest Idaho at 6,200 feet elevation, supported a thriving silver and gold mining boom in the 1800s. Originally sporting a population of around 2,500, including 75 businesses, 300 homes, and 12 ore processing plants, Silver City was also the County Seat and had the first telegraph and daily newspaper in the territory in 1874. Electricity was brought to the city in the 1890s.

About 75 original, privately-owned, structures dating back to the 1860s still remain in Silver City. These buildings are maintained as historical legacies by the owners, providing real insight into life during the early history of Idaho and the west. The Idaho Hotel is pretty much like it was 100 years ago, with a few modern amenities added (though not many).

Some of the buildings we'll have access to: Idaho Hotel (some areas closed to the public), Masonic Hall (1868 - still in use), Catholic Church of Our Lady of Tears (1896), and the Getchell Drug Store. The cemetery is separated into a public section and a Mason's section. Many founders of Silver City and ancestors of current residents are found here.

During this 3-day workshop we'll cover such topics as composition, off-camera flash, filters, observing light, camera operation, and others.

Digital and film photographers welcome.

Gateway city is Boise, Idaho. We will carpool from there for local partcipants. Out-of-town participants can rent your own vehicle in Boise or carpool can be arranged. It is about a 2-hour drive from Boise to Silver City.
