The Skinny on Blue Planet
What is Blue Planet Photography?
Blue Planet Photography is a commercial, stock, fine art, and instructional photography business owned and operated by me and my wife. I’m the photographer, instructor, web designer, and general do-it-yourselfer. My wife is support, marketing, and assistant. Blue Planet Photography helps you and your business look great.
How did Blue Planet Photography get its start?
Blue Planet Photography was officially started in 1994 when I created my first web site. I’ve been photographing most of my life and I’m self-taught. My education and prior career is actually in wildlife biology. I have a B.S. in Wildlife Biology from Colorado State University and have worked for Federal agencies, the Denver Museum of Natural History, and private consulting. I’d been doing photography as a business since 1998 (part time) and in 2004 made the move to full time.
Where did you get the name “Blue Planet Photography”?
I believe, as conservationist Aldo Leopold did, that humans are not separate from nature but “plain member and citizen of it”. To that end, my photographs relate to my connection with the environment around me and portray the human membership as we view, use, exploit, abuse, and interact with life on Earth, which is 3/4 water. I wrote an essay in college called “Blue Planet”, before the PBS series came out, and I had forgotten about it. When I was thinking of names for my business I came across the essay again and thought it was very appropriate, given my background and photographic interests, which tend to be widespread rather than specific, like concentrating on wildlife and/or nature. My job experiences ranging from wildlife research, museum curation, gold mining, and high-tech have provided me with the ability to appreciate beauty in all things.
What equipment do you use?
I shoot 100% digital capture using a Canon EOS 1Ds and have in the past created images using Polaroid emulsion transfer, SX-70 manipulation techniques and digital manipulation (until my supply of Polaroid film runs out, I still have some stockpiled). I have a small selection of lenses: Canon 24 - 70 2.8L, Canon 70-200 IS 2.8L, and a Lensbaby 2.0. I use a Bogen/Manfrotto 3221 tripod with 3265 trigger ball head or Acratech GV2. I use Canon 580EX strobes and some Pocket Wizard transmitters/receivers. I also have lights and equipment for studio work.
